This platform has been created to facilitate dialogue and planning by civil society organisations in the SIDS AIMS “region” for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to be held in Apia, Samoa in 2014.
The United Nations General Assembly has decided that the Conference will seek to achieve the following objectives.
a. Assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation.
b. Seek a renewed political commitment
c. Identify new and emerging challenges and opportunities for the sustainable development of SIDS and the means of addressing them
d. Identify priorities for the sustainable development of SIDS to be considered in the elaboration of the post 2015 UN development agenda.
The resolution calls for a “concise, focused, forward-looking and action oriented political document”. The SIDS have also expressed their desire to highlight successful partnerships and areas of innovation.
The preparations for the Conference are underway. National preparations will feed into the regional AIMS Preparatory meeting in July 2013 in Seychelles followed by inter-regional preparatory meetings in August or September.
After the SIDS have completed their preparations, the global process will begin in early 2014, brining together the full range of stakeholders – Member States, civil society and others.
An AIMS Civil Society Steering Committee has been set up consisting of members who had organised the civil society forum and civil society response at the Second International Conference on Small Island Developing States held in Mauritius in 2005.
The Steering Committee currently consists of CEDREFI (Mauritius), Nature Seychelles (Seychelles), ULANGA (Comoros) and SHASI (Maldives). A draft Regional Concept Note as well as a draft Declaration of the SIDS Civil Society of the AIMS Region have been prepared and can be viewed on this platform. National preparations by civil society are also underway.
